If you happened to see fire and smoke creeping across the prairie at Ohio State University’s Marion campus on Thursday, March 29, you were hopefully not too alarmed. The fire was set on purpose to encourage growth at the nature preserve.

In observance of the Good Friday holiday, offices located in Marion City Hall will be closed on Friday, April 6, 2012. Due to City Hall being closed on Friday, the weekly early closure day will be observed on Thursday, April 5, 2012.
Petition Accepted for Repeal of Same-Sex Marriage Ban
On the second try, a proposed constitutional amendment to repeal Ohio’s same-sex marriage ban was certified Tuesday by Attorney General Mike DeWine.
DeWine decided that the petition submitted last week by the Freedom To Marry Ohio coalition contained the requisite 1,000 valid signatures of Ohio registered voters and included a “fair and truthful” summary of the proposed amendment.
Court Strikes Down Lifetime Registration for Juvenile Sex Offenders
The Ohio Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down a lifetime requirement that certain juvenile sex offenders register online and elsewhere, saying it was cruel and unusual punishment.
Justice Paul E. Pfeifer wrote the majority opinion for the court and cited a growing national consensus in other states against imposing automatic lifetime registration requirements against juvenile sex offenders.
YMCA Kicking Off West Side Community Center Activities
The Marion Family YMCA will kick off the new West Side Community Center activities, targeted towards individuals living in the west side of Marion, with an open house at the Rushmore Academy school building, 1665 Amherst Drive, on Wednesday, April 4 from 3:30pm to 4:45pm and from 7:15pm to 8:00pm.
Red Cross Holding Babysitter’s Training Class
The American Red Cross – Marion County Chapter – will present its Babysitter’s Training class, Saturday, April 7, 2012, at The Alber Red Cross Center, 1849 Summerset Drive. The training runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
MTC’s ABLE to Offer Free ESOL Online Program
Marion Technical College’s ABLE program is set to offer an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) online program. Those interested in the program will enroll by attending a one orientation session at the Marion Campus. This class prepares students to enroll in the English for speakers of other languages online program.

Marion County Republican Party officers were elected and Central and Executive committeemen were sworn in by Judge Robert Davidson at the bi-annual re-organizational meeting Tuesday, March 27, at GOP Headquarters. All positions are for a two-year term.
