Downtown Marion Kicks Off Market

What do tomatoes, German cookies, honey, quilts, and green beans have in common?  All of those items and more will be part of the new Downtown Marion Market set to kick off this Friday. Markets will run from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm every Friday through October 12, except for Marion Popcorn Festival week.

Ohio Voters Can Now Update Address Online

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today launched a new online service that allows Ohio's registered voters to update their voting address online. This new tool, housed at www.MyOhioVote.com, will help voters in meeting their primary responsibility: To be registered at their current addresses 30 days prior to an election. Additionally, reducing manual data entry at Ohio's boards of elections will save tax dollars and improve the accuracy and security of Ohio's voter rolls.

Two Marion Students Named Winners in Weather Safety Poster Contest

Landon Long, a second grader in Pickaway County during the 2011-2012 school year, was recognized at the Ohio State Fair as the overall state winner in a statewide poster contest. 52 other students were also recognized as regional winners in the contest, including Daphne Parker, a first grader at Liberty Elementary, and Evan Hopple, a fifth grader at Liberty Elementary.

TV, Electronics Recycling Collection Set for Saturday

A television and electronics recycling collection will be held on Saturday, August 11, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Computers, monitors, cables, keyboards, hard drives (guaranteed data destruction), stereos, televisions, cell phones, batteries, cameras, game systems, fax machines, copiers, video players, speakers, and other such electronic devices will be accepted.

Marion Church Holding School Supply Give Away

Cornerstone Alliance Church is holding a free school supply give-away for students in grades K-12 on Saturday, August 11, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The give-away will be held at the church located at 2010 Marion-Marysville Road in Marion.

Local Woman to be Honored at OSU Summer Commencement

Five individuals, including Marion's own Trella Romine, will be honored at The Ohio State University’s summer 2012 commencement for their contributions to society and academics, and their dedication to the university. The university will present the Distinguished Service Award to Romine, who was instrumental in establishing the Larry Yoder Prairie Nature Preserve at Ohio State Marion.

Approval of AEP Rate Plan Could Mean Rate Increases

The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) says customers will see hundreds of millions of dollars in new rate increases following a decision Wednesday by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to authorize a new American Electric Power (AEP) rate plan.  Under the law, AEP has the right to now consider whether or not to accept the modified plan.

Ohio AG Releases State Sex Trafficking Report

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Wednesday released a report outlining findings of an Ohio sex trafficking study that centered around 328 self-identified human trafficking victims.

The report, issued by the Attorney General's Human Trafficking Commission and authored by commission member and University of Toledo Professor Celia Williamson, took more than a year to compile and focuses on minor and adult sex trafficking across the state.

Man Purchases Home, Finds Tombstones

When Michael Doughterly recently purchased his house on Congress Street in Marion he found he had more than just a new home. After the purchase, he discovered two tombstones in his new backyard. Looking for help on what to do, Doughterly contacted Susan Matthews, President of the Marion Genealogy Society and member of the Friends of Marion Cemeteries and OGS Cemetery Committees.

DNA Evidence Results in Charges Connected to April Armed Robbery

The Marion Police Department says they have received a positive match on evidence from an April robbery leading them to file charges against a local teen.
