Over 300 families benefit from Marion City Schools’ holiday produce market

produce market - 151120About 330 families have extra food for the Thanksgiving holiday thanks to Marion City School’s first drive-up produce market held on Thursday, November 19, 2015.

Volunteers from Marion City Schools and Whirlpool Corp.’s Marion plant distributed canned goods and fresh produce during the produce market held Thursday afternoon at Grant Middle School. Each family received a box with at least 25 non-perishable food items collected during a food drive held in October in collaboration with Whirlpool. Mid-Ohio Food Bank donated apples, oranges, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes that were also distributed to families.

Volunteers including students and staff worked prior to the event to bag items.

Much of the non-perishable items came from a food drive that Whirlpool held on October 10 in conjunction with its 60th anniversary celebration.

Marion City Schools Food Service Supervisor Winnie Brewer called it a great collaboration with Whirlpool and thanked the plant for turning its anniversary celebration into a great opportunity for the community.

Items were also collected at Benjamin Harrison Elementary and at Marion Harding High School’s homecoming football game.
