Grant Middle School Student Crowned Miss Teeny Pop

Jennifer Moodie was chosen Miss Teeny Pop 2010 Saturday during competition at River Valley High School. The 11-year also won her age group in all three categories of competition: Modeling, Talent and Commercial.

Moodie is the daughter of Kristie and Larry Moodie, and is in the 6th grade at Grant Middle School.

Ohio State to Use Online Roommate Matching System

Ohio State University is using a written survey to match up freshman roommates in the final year before the process is computerized.

The school will move to an online system that will determine whether students are likely to get along based on factors including neatness, sleeping habits and whether they smoke. A Facebook page also is being developed where students can look for the right roomie on their own.

Two More Arrested in Connection to Marion County Burglaries

An investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has led to the arrest of two additional burglary suspects. They join four others arrested previously. The two crimes allegedly took place on the same day with one in the City of Marion and the other in the county.

Patrol Reports Large Increase in ID Theft

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has noticed an alarming trend – identity theft cases are on the rise. The Patrol has observed a 55 percent increase so far this year in identity theft cases resulting from traffic stops and contact made at Ohio driver license exam stations.

State Reports Liquor Sales Increase, Large Profit Margin

Ohio Department of Commerce Director Kimberly A. Zurz and Acting Superintendent of Liquor Control Ernie Davis say that spirituous liquor dollar sales by the state’s 453 contract liquor agencies reached a record high of $742.7 million in Fiscal Year 2010. In addition to overall sales, the profit margin for the state also increased.

Miss Teen Popcorn Competition is Saturday

Fourteen contestants will vie for the title of 2010 Miss Teen Popcorn on Saturday, August 14, 7:00 pm, in festivities at River Valley High School. The 2010 Miss Teen Popcorn will receive scholarship money and prizes, be highlighted on the Festival’s main stage, take part in the Orville Redenbacher Parade, and represent the Marion Popcorn Festival at local and statewide events throughout the coming year.

Downtown Marion Art Walk Features Music and More

ArtWalk is in downtown Marion tonight (Friday, August 13). The monthly event features art displays and demonstrations. There is always plenty of art for sale as well. In addition, there will be live music in a variety of styles at three restaurants in the downton area.

Union County Red Cross Director Killed in Crash

A crash in Boone County, Kentucky on Wednesday resulted in the death of two Ohio women. One of those women was Lynne Whatley, the Executive Director of the Union County Red Cross.
