Officials Urge Caution Before Re-Hiring Police Officers

While one Marion City Council member pushed Monday to re-hire two police officers, the mayor and other council members urged a wait-and-see strategy before spending any potential increase in tax revenues. No other member of Council or the administration supported re-hiring the officers, or anyone else, at this time.

After a lot of discussion and passionate input from residents on both sides of the debate, Marion City Council voted Monday, April 23, to approve universal, or mandated, income tax filing and a reduction of the income tax credit for residents who work in municipalities with higher tax rates.

City Council Approves Leasing Portion of Park for Farming

The City of Marion is seeking bids to farm land located within a city park. Marion City Parks Superintendent Mike Cheney asked the Airport, Lands, and Buildings Committee to allow him to advertise for bids and enter into a contract to lease about 26 acres of Sawyer-Ludwig Park for farming. The section to be leased is in the south and southwest section of the park.

City Council Committees Meet Tuesday

Four City Council Committees will meet on Tuesday, March 20, to discuss a variety of issues, including the income tax for the City, traffic on Council Street, janitorial services, and various fund adjustments. They will also get an update on the progress at the new aquatic center.

Chickens In, Others Out as Council Discusses Animal Restrictions

There were very few words of compassion for responsible owners of animals who would be forced to get rid of those animals under a proposed ordinance being discussed at City Council. The Legislation, Codes, and Regulations Committee again discussed the proposal at their meeting on Tuesday. As currently written, it would prohibit the housing of various animals within the City of Marion with very few exceptions.

Proposal Calls for One Acre Per Animal in the City

Members of Marion City Council continue to discuss a proposal to tighten up regulations regarding farm-type animals within the City. The latest draft of the ordinance calls for an animal owner to have one acre of land per animal. In other words, if you wish to own a chicken within the City limits, you must live on at least one acre of land.
