Governor John Kasich on Monday signed a bill that steps up public education standards across Ohio and includes a requirement that some third-graders be held back if they cannot read at grade level.
The third grade reading guarantee was the hot-button topic in Senate Bill 316, a multi-faceted education and workforce development bill that the Republican governor signed in Cincinnati.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Miami County Prosecutor Gary Nasal today announced felony charges against 18 suspects accused of running a telemarketing fraud ring from Ohio and Florida that has stolen millions of dollars from thousands of victims in 41 states since 2007. Thirteen of the suspects have been taken into custody in Ohio, Florida, Indiana, and New York. Those from out of state will be extradited to Ohio.
The Shepherd's Fellowship in Marion is hosting free music lessons every other Thursday through the summer. The next classes are set for Thursday, June 28. They have instructors for guitar, bass guitar, and drums who are volunteering their time to help students.
The Marion Division of Aqua Ohio (recently acquired from Ohio American Water) is working with the City of Marion to improve water system infrastructure during planned construction by the City over the summer. The City is improving its sewer system under Oak, Robinson and May Streets. Because these projects involve open cuts into these streets, Aqua says they are taking advantage of the opportunity to install aging infrastructure to help improve the water quality, pressure, reliability and fire service in the area.
Citing a concern that FirstEnergy customers could be subjected to electric bill increases from approximately 4% to 30 % for Cleveland Electric Illuminating, 4% to 26% for Toledo Edison and 4% to 27% for Ohio Edison, the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) and two major local government aggregation coalitions, representing all of FirstEnergy’s 1.9 million residential consumers, has filed briefs to ask the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to reject the utilities’ proposed electric security plan and the settlement of other parties that support it.
In the previous two-year session, a politically divided government set a modern record for legislative inactivity, passing just 58 bills. This session, with an aggressive agenda from Gov. John Kasich’s office and now-solid GOP majorities in the House and Senate, the legislature so far has passed about 150 bills.

Ohio State Marion students awarded nearly $5000 in grants to area charitable organizations through fundraising efforts in 2012, while gaining knowledge on the framework of “Paying it Forward.” Thanks to increase support, the program expects to donate even more funds next year.
